Igor Trepeshchenok’s project ‘Association Football’ is not just about football. It is more about the sport’s association with the history and culture of England and especially Cornwall, where many teams were born in the mining villages and towns to bring a relief after hard work.
Today, this sport is commonly known as ‘football’, but a long time ago its common name was ‘association football’ – to distinguish this game from other type of “foot-ball-games”, rugby football in particular.
It feels like here in Cornwall, however, it is still association football as it was invented - none of the teams are professional like in the 19 century and the game itself is boisterous, nontechnical and very sincere. Hard and courageous like rugby, only the rules are different.
